Moons of Jupiter

Jupiter has 95 known natural satellites.

About Jupiter's Moon System

Jupiter possesses the most extensive moon system in our solar system, with 95 confirmed moons as of 2024. The four largest -- Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto -- are known as the Galilean moons, discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610. Ganymede is the largest moon in the solar system, even larger than the planet Mercury. Io is the most volcanically active body known, with hundreds of active volcanoes driven by tidal heating from Jupiter's immense gravity. Europa is of extraordinary scientific interest because it harbors a global subsurface ocean beneath an icy crust, making it a prime candidate in the search for extraterrestrial life. The remaining moons are much smaller and include both regular and irregular satellites, many captured from the asteroid belt or Kuiper Belt.
