Understanding Rocket Launches: How We Reach Space

Rocket launches are the gateway to space exploration, satellite deployment, and scientific discovery. Today's launch industry is more active than ever, with multiple providers conducting missions every week. SpaceX leads in launch frequency with its reusable Falcon 9 rocket, which has revolutionized the industry with routine booster landings and rapid turnaround times. NASA continues crewed missions with the Space Launch System (SLS) and commercial crew partnerships, while United Launch Alliance (ULA) operates the Atlas V and Vulcan Centaur for national security and scientific payloads.

Internationally, Rocket Lab provides dedicated small satellite launches from New Zealand and Virginia with its Electron rocket, ESA operates from French Guiana with Ariane 6, and ISRO (India), JAXA (Japan), and CNSA(China) maintain active launch programs. Major launch sites include Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, and the Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana. Each site is chosen for its geographic advantages — equatorial locations provide a velocity boost from Earth's rotation for geostationary orbit insertions.

Every launch follows a precise sequence: from final countdown checks and propellant loading, through main engine ignition and liftoff, to stage separation, payload deployment, and (for reusable rockets) booster recovery. Track the International Space Station to see where cargo and crew missions are headed, or browse the NASA gallery for stunning launch photography. Interested in planetary missions? Frequently Asked Questions About Rocket Launches

When is the next rocket launch?+
The upcoming launches section at the top of this page shows the next scheduled rocket launches worldwide, updated hourly. Launch dates can change due to weather, technical issues, or range conflicts. Most launches have a defined launch window — the specific time period during which conditions allow the rocket to reach its intended orbit.
Where can I watch rocket launches?+
Most rocket launches are livestreamed by their providers. SpaceX streams on X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube, NASA launches are available on NASA TV and nasa.gov/live, and other providers stream on their official channels. For in-person viewing, popular launch sites include Kennedy Space Center (Florida), Vandenberg Space Force Base (California), and Baikonur Cosmodrome (Kazakhstan). Each launch detail page links to available webcasts.
How often does SpaceX launch?+
SpaceX has significantly increased its launch cadence, averaging over 90 launches per year with its Falcon 9 rocket. In some months, SpaceX launches multiple times per week. The company also conducts test flights of its Starship vehicle, the largest and most powerful rocket ever built, designed for deep space missions to the Moon and Mars.
What is a launch window?+
A launch window is the specific time period during which a rocket can lift off and still reach its intended orbit or destination. For missions to the International Space Station, the window may last only seconds (an "instantaneous" window) because the rocket must launch when the ISS orbit passes over the launch site. Geostationary satellite launches typically have windows of 1-2 hours, while interplanetary missions may have windows lasting days or weeks.
