Mars InSight Landing

The lander sent a signal affirming a completed landing sequence at approximately 3 p.m. EST (noon PST) after touching down on the western side of a flat, smooth expanse of lava called Elysium Planitila. InSight, short for Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport, is a Mars lander designed to study the "inner space" of Mars: its crust, mantle, and core.
