
The JIRAM (Jovian Infrared Auroral Mapper) instrument aboard NASA's Juno spacecraft captured this view of the south polar region of Jupiter's volcanic moon Io during a flyby on Dec. 27, 2024. JIRAM "sees" infrared light not visible to the human eye. This animation shows actual data from JIRAM, with minimal processing. The bright spots indicate locations with higher temperatures caused by volcanic activity, including an area with such a strong signal that it saturated the sensor.
