
In the heart of the high plateau of Grenada in southern Spain is the small town of Orce. Archaeological excavations have discovered the remains of the earliest humans on the European continent, dating back 1.4 million years. At that time, the area was near ancient Lake Orce-Baza, and supported a rich fauna of animals, including mammoths and sabre-tooth tigers.
