
Providencia Island, located in the Caribbean Sea, is part of Colombia even though located 800 km northwest of mainland Colombia. The small island has an area of 17 square kilometers. First settled in 1629 by Puritans on the Seaflower ship, the island was taken by Spain in 1641. Providencia is the center point of the UNESCO Marine Protected Area the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve.
