"While in college, I discovered a program called Stay in School where high school and college students go to work part-time in the government. I was in the program for about two years before I came to NASA in October 1985. It was shortly before the Shuttle accident. I was a math major and I liked to challenge myself, so I thought that I would come to NASA to help build satellites or rockets or something… but when I came here, I was assigned to the Public Affairs Office. "And when the Challenger accident happened, I saw how everyone came together in the public affairs office. I mean, they were helping people — news media — everybody. And I was like, 'I like this!' So I stayed. And I forgot all about being a rocket scientist. And that’s the path I took. The rest is history. I’ve been here ever since."
