NASA researchers describe their science objectives to study severe weather as part of the Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel, or the HS3 airborne campaign. Between 2012 and 2014, the HS3 mission used two Global Hawk drones supported by NASA researchers on the ground at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility and NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center to control the aircraft and analyze the data collected from high in the sky. This research is helping refine the prediction of storm and hurricane growth.
