
An Atlas-Centaur rocket carrying the Mariner 6 spacecraft lifted off from Cape Kennedy’s Launch Complex 36B at 8:29 P.M. EST, February 24, 1969. The spacecraft’s journey to Mars will span five months, bringing it to within 2,000 miles to help determine whether that planet can support life.
